Good rules for traveling: Avoid expensive jewelry or fine clothing. After putting out everything you want to take, leave half of it at home. For backpackers, about 75% of it, and then think, am I actually going to use this? Never take anything that you can't replace. Never keep all your cash or credit cards in one place. Make copies of your passport and other documents plus scan them in and send them to an email address that you can access anywhere.

if only to throw to dogs when attacked by them."
